Civil Protective Orders
There are three available civil protective orders in Iowa to protect victims from three forms of abuse: domestic abuse, sexual abuse and elder abuse. In each case, the victim completes a Petition asking for relief from the abuse. The Petition is reviewed by a judge right away. The judge can issue a temporary protective order and set a hearing or the judge can set a hearing without issuing a temporary order if the facts in the Petition are not sufficient to grant a temporary order.
If you feel like you are in immediate danger, you should contact your local police or Waypoint's Domestic Violence Services Advocates: 1-800-208-0388, then contact an attorney. Michelle Jungers has many years of experience helping victims obtain civil protection orders.
